Both view?

Dear Friends,

I wonder which of the following is better:

1. His theory, which combines features of both echoic mention pretense views, is great.
2. His theory, which combines features of both echoic mention and pretense view, is great.

Echoic mention and pretense are particular theories, so I suppose the plural will do as well. What do you natives think?

Thank you.

If "view" is generic, and not considered a "technical term" in this context, I'd use the plural. If it were something like, both mercator and polar projection , I'd use the singular, but I think plural would be okay.

I think this is what you want.

Don't you think your solution may come out as if there were more than one pretense view? In fact, I'm referring to only one.

No. both means two, no more. So both signals 1. the echoic-mention view and 2. the pretense view -- one of each.

For example, the following would be wrong: *I like both the red, green, and blue pencils.
