'Both' Placement

I had two roles as I performed both the responsibilities of an administrator and a moderator.
I had two roles as I performed the responsibilities of both an administrator and a moderator.
I had two roles as I performed both responsibilities of an administrator and a moderator.

Which is correct above for placement of 'both'?
If all are possible, which is most natural?
In the third sentence, I omitted 'the' after 'both'. Is this correct? How is it different in meaning from the first sentence?

Which is correct for placement of 'both'?-- The one above only. 'Both' must be placed as near as possible to its referents.
