Both of them/Them both

Two men are in a sword fight when...

One of Julian's arms flies off, leaving both of them/them both paralyzed for a moment. Then David takes another swing at Julian, who dodges.

1. Is this alright?

2. Do you prefer 'both of them' or 'them both'?
