Hi.

But when the Earnshaws and the Lintons arrived back from church, the first thing Hindley did was shout at Heathcliff.

How can I change the #2 sentence to make it correct without changing shouting at Heathcliff. In fact I'm still uneasy with this grammar structure and I am not sure I would choose the right grammar next time facing the same situation. I would also appreciate it if you could elaborate on this pattern a little bit further.
