What is the difference between Both and (The) Two ?

Right at the moment, they seem the same to me.

Both of them are in jail.

The two of them are in jail.

I think that with "the two of them" it's implied there's a connection between them other than the one stated in the sentence.

I started out with a list of about 200 suspects, and I've narrowed it down to A

I would suggest that you write out sentences using 'both' and '(The) two' so that it is easier for other members to comment on the difference.
