Both

Hi,

"He and Messrs Myler and Crone cannot both be right. [From today's The Independent.]

There are three persons as the subject and there is the pronoun "both" as a complement in the sentence. My question is: which persons does the pronoun "both" refer to?

Thank you.

However, if Mssrs Myler and Crone are of one opinion and "he" is of another, a complete rewording would be necessary.[The opinion shared by Mssrs Myler and Crone and that of (he) cannot both be right.]
