Born is both an adjective and the past participle of bear . Here it is the past participle, used in the standard passive voice construction for a birth. Nothing strange about that, just of restricted use.

It is an irregular participial adjective (an adjective derived from a verb):

Grammar teacher here; I don't see how born, or borne, can be participle adjectives. As far as I'm concerned, it is purely a verb, unless you want to really stretch it into something like "of woman born" or 'waterborne disease'. If my class asked, I'd say it's pretty much solely used as a verb.
