Letter Writing

Boring but crucial question.

Dear fellow english forums users,

It may seem a boring or repetitive question about cover letter. yet i have to ask.

I have read many of the letters but i still cannot differentiate between a cover letter and a motivation letter because many of the writings which look like cover letters are dubbed as motivation letters and vice versa. please clear this once and for all.

second I have read many cover letter here and importantly suggestions by other users as i have read from other websites helping to write cover letters. There is a marked difference between tips given here and other website. for example the length of the cover letter is controversial and other things like what segments are and arranged how?

i want to ask what are good examples of writing cover letters in response PhD positions? length, substance and order of paragraph? it seems people are still writing motivation letters instead of cover letter or inversly writing cover letter in motivation letter style. i would like to know what is the correct and acceptable style?

when a researcher from germany, austria,US or Australia ask for a cover letter what do they really mean?

please reply if you have serioius answers, if you dont have serious ideas to share dont do it because I have given a lot of time reading from other websites and posts and it wont help

sorry if that was a repetition.

thanks in anticipation

Hi, Here's a very basic comment on terminology. A cover lettter is so named because it 'covers' one or more attachments. On these forums, attachments are typically resumes or CVs, but really they can be anything, eg the minutes of a meeting or a list of people's phone numbers.

  • A cover letter basically says eg 'Here is an attachment'.
  • The writer may then add further information about the attachment, eg why he should be given the job, or why he should be accepted by the university, or why the minutes of the meeting are late.
