Borderline failure

Hi

I don't quite understand what "borderline" means in this context.

Very close to not being acceptable e.g. a borderline failure on an exam

Is that failure almost a pass?

Thanks!

That doesn't make sense. A borderline failure would be almost a pass, in other words close to being acceptable. "close to not being acceptable" would be a borderline pass.

The school has a rule that a student needs to make 60 out of 100 on an exam to pass.

So 59 is a borderline failing grade, and 60 is a borderline passing grade.
