Bordered on friendliness

Then that night, right before dinner, my grandfather summoned me into the front room. He didn't call to me as I was walking by — that would have bordered on friendliness.

What's the meaning of the bordered on friendliness?

Literally "almost friendly". It is being used sarcastically in your example, suggesting that the grandfather is never friendly at all.

Do I understand it correctly: that night grandpa asked me to see him in the room. but he didn't call me directly even when I walked near him. If he'd call me directly, he is almost friendly.

Thanks!
