Border outpost, post, rangers

Srinagar, Jan. 26 (ANI): The Border Security Force (BSF) foiled another infiltration bid on Tuesday (January 26) at Kanachak border outpost in Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir.
The BSF and Pakistani rangers exchanged heavy fire after Pakistani rangers fired at the Indian positions, a BSF officer said.
The firing started at around 2 a.m. (local time) and continued till 7 in the morning.
"The movement of militants was seen near the post. When they were challenged they started firing on us and also used area weapons. For that firing, we also retaliated and the infiltration bid was successfully foiled. The firing continued at 3 to 4 posts in a large area and they even fired RPG's on us," said A. K. Surrolia, Inspector General (IG), BSF.

Could you please explain to me the emboldened parts?

I guess "rangers" means "soldiers" though.
