Bookshelf

I've got a bookshelf in my room with a glass door that opens in the middle. Unfortunately, some of the books don't fit in there. I either have to stack them one on another or I have to put them in a different position (towards one side). Could I then say: I had to put some of my books sideways, otherwise they don't fit in the shelf. (Is the word 'sideways' appropriate?)

Thank you!
