Books belonging to John

Can one use:
1) You have taken John's books you are not supposed to take.
instead of
2) You have taken books belonging to John you are not supposed to take.

I don't think '1' works.

I think you need a slight change:

You have taken some books belonging to John that you are not supposed to take.
