Book/reserve

Could you please tell me the difference between "reserve" and "book"? when would you reserve something? when would you book something? Many thanks.

They seem synonymous to me, with 'reserve' more formal than 'book':

'Book me a room at the Ritz, will you, Jeeves?'
'Your accommodations have already been reserved, sir.'
