Book/dictioanry

I am a student of English Language. I am currently facing a problem that I want to know the differences between the words like principle & canon, lie & lay etc. etc. I want to know the best book that I can consult to solve my problem of the meaning of words and the proper usage of the words in speaking and writing?

Thanks
