Book the church

Hello,
What phrase (I assume that "book a/the church" is incorrect) should I use when arranging a mass in a church for a wedding?

Thank you.

Hi,

I'd say 'a service' rather than 'a mass'.

A mass usually refers to the Eucharist, especially in the Catholic church. Let's be ecumenical about this.

But if one is Catholic, why would one be correct to book a church for a wedding service, but not to book a church for a wedding mass?

Hi,

I'm getting out of my depth as regards religious ritual. Does a wedding ceremony actually involve having a mass? I didn't think so.

Ah! Now I get it! Yes, all the Catholic weddings I've ever attended involved having a mass. I can't answer with any authority whether this is obligatory, but I've always assumed it was.
