Book review

Hello,

I would be happy if one of you could correct m book review about "Brave New World":

The novel “Brave New World” written by Andous Huxley was published 1931 and ranks fifth on the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. It covers this issue of the use of technology to control a society and tells the incompatibility of happiness and the demand of truth.

In the year 2540 children are chemically produced and then sorted into castes. The childrens’ intelligence level can be adjusted by electro shocks and deprivation of oxygen. The plot starts with the introduction of some of the main characters. Lenina talks about her attraction to Bernhard, who is smaller than the average and suffers of low self-confidence. They talk about their plan to fly to the Savage Reservation in New Mexico. But before Bernhard has to meet Helmholtz Watson, who is too intelligent for his job. They both discuss their dissatisfaction about the World State. Bernhard then asks the Director for permission to visit the Reservation. The Director tells a story about his past in which he has lost a woman in a storm. Finally he gives his permission, so that Bernhard and Lenina can go. After they reached the Reservation they experience literature and religion which are strictly forbidden in the World State. Then they meet John whose mother is Linda. Linda is the woman, the Director lost in the storm. John his son. After Lenina, Bernard, John and Linda return to the World State they want to intimidate the Director by exposing that John is his son. Having children is one of the worst things that can happen to a “modern” person. After a while Linda dies while her son John is sitting next to her. As he feels sad he curses the World State and the drug Soma, which makes the inhabitants feel happy. At the end of the story John files to a lighthouse where he finally hangs himself.

The book “Brave New World” criticizes the danger of a too powerful state which controls its citizens. It also shows the damage that might appear if people tried to develop a rational world without history and emotions.

The book deals with a very contemporary topic. During the last years our world has more and more turned into a digitalized one. Technology now is ruling important parts our lives “Brave New World” tells about the harm of a world that is focused on rules and a destined order. It gives a scary image about what could be our future. All in all I enjoyed reading this novel which was written over 80 years ago but it covers a topic that couldn’t be more up-to-date.

Thank you very much!
