bonfires burned

Hi, can you help me please with this phrase burn a bonfire. I couldn't find it anywhere. Is it an idiom.

"For so many years over the past quarter-century, while bonfires burned across the league, with one team or another facing bankruptcy or extinciton , the Grand National Drunk would arrive like the calvary and deliver 60 minutes of wild entertainmnet to captivate Canadians from Fredriction to Kelowna and convince them not to give up on the CFL altogether"

I understand that CFL didn't do well and finally ...

Thank you.

Hi Olga, What I think the author is trying to say is that there are many problems or "fires" that need to be address throughtout the league. Mostlikely many of these " bonfires" or big problems are related to poor financial situations, especially in this context. This is a variation the expression, "putting out fires" or problem solving.
