Considered the following sentence"Yet it was the King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, the very  people who accepted the inquisition in motion, that Columbus would have  to appeal to finance his bold plan to cross the ocean."What is the meaning of bold plan?

Considered the following sentence
"Yet it was the King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, the very people who accepted the inquisition in motion, that Columbus would have to appeal to finance his bold plan to cross the ocean."

What is the meaning of bold plan? Columbus had a plan of action. This action would require courage (boldness).

There are some things abot this sentence that I would change.

"Yet it was to King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain, the very people who set the Inquisition in motion, that Columbus would have to appeal to finance his bold plan to cross the ocean."

1)Set the Inquisition in motion
From my dictionary, inquisition means investigation, but I still can't understand what is Set the Inquisition in motion. May I know what is the meaning?

2) would have to appeal to
From my dictionary, appeal means an earnest or urgent request, does it mean that Columbus need to request King Ferdinand and Queen Isabella of Spain to support his bold plan to cross the ocean?

The Inquisition is a rather dark period during the history of the Catholic Church in Spain, purging the church of Jews, Muslims, witches and others determined to be undesirable. Set in motion = begin.

Columbus appealed = asked
