"Bode well for sb to do" or "bode well for sb's doing"

Dear all, I am new to this forum but found people here very helpful. I have a question regarding how to use " bode well for". Should I say:

This bodes well for him to defend his thesis

or

This bodes well for his defending his thesis

Thank you!

Keep in mind that 'defence' is the British English spelling of that word. 'Defense' has the same meaning and is the preferred spelling in USA.
