Bob

Greetings!

All examples are mine.

---

(1a) Bob didn’t know how to ski so his friends taught him.

(1b) Bob hadn’t known how to ski so his friends taught him.

Are (1a) & (1b) both correct?

What's the difference between (1a) & (1b)?

---

Does anything change (in terms of the difference between "didn't know" and "hadn't known") if we replace "so" with "but"?:

(2a) Bob didn’t know how to ski but his friends taught him.

(2b) Bob hadn’t known how to ski but his friends taught him.

---

Thanks!
