When you "board" the plane, you get on. (You find your seat, you stow your stuff, you sit down.) In the terminal, you'll hear "We'll begin boarding in just a few minutes" or something like that.

You then stay aboard until you deplane, or get off.

It's the same as if I said "What's the difference between getting into your car and staying in your car?"
