Blue shadows descended over the land

Hi,

Can you look at this sentence and help to explain what the words in bold mean?

The sun was disappearing behind the forest to the west, and as the purple twilight and blue shadows descended over the land, the castle walls turned golden with the refracted light.

1) What shadows are they? Are they shadows of the trees ? Why are they blue? Are they shadows of the clouds?
2) What does "descended over the land" mean? Does it say the shadows descended under the land? So how can one see the shadows?

Thanks.
Regards
Stephen

Thank you very much.
Now I understand.
I thought "over" means under, so I was confused.
Thanks again.
