Block out the memory

Hello~ I don't understand the exact meaning of the last sentence.

Does that mean 1) "to block out retrieving past memory, once a similiar event is triggered" OR

2) "to block out that a memory happens, once a new sensory related event is triggered" ?

In this context, which do you think is better interpretation ?

Thank you for your help !

Multisensory stimulation explains why traumatic events are hard to forget. Whenever you perceive that
you are in danger, the brain heightens your senses. The result is that during traumatic events, individuals are more likely to remember sounds, smells, textures, tastes, and sights. This makes it hard to block out the
memory, once a related sensory event is triggered.
