block out and shut out

Hello,
What would be the differences in meaning between: "He has always managed to shut out/block out the incident." if they both mean "to stop yourself from thinking about something"?

Thank you

I think you answered your own question: they both mean "to stop yourself from thinking about something", so there is little difference.
