block off/close off/seal off

Hello,
Can "block off" be used instead of close off in this sentence: "The police have closed off the high street to traffic"? I would not use it, but could you tell me if it is acceptable?

Can we also close buildings off? Are we not more likely to say: "They sealed off the building so that the investigation could begin"? Can we also use close off in collocation with buildings/areas/etc?
