Blink

Hi!

I was reading a novel, and comes across a sentence that I can't really figure it out.

It says:

"I lie on the ground, blinking into a pool of my own blood..."

What exactly does the word blinking means here?

How is the action done by the eyes has anything to do with "a pool of blood"?

Thanks so much!
