Bleed red

Hello there and a happy new year ....

I´ve got a question: a huge fan of an football team says: i bleed football team red.

What does it mean? Is it an idiom or do i have to understand, that´s he would bleed for the team ... or what?

Thanks so much for helping!

Hi, A fan of a team that uses eg green shirts might say 'If you cut me, I bleed green', as a humorous way of stressing what a huge fan he is. It seems to be the same idea here, although maybe there is also a further joke, since blood is literally red. Clive
