Blanket, quilt, or comforter?

What do you call this thingie?

It's kind of thick, I put it on my body when I sleep.
Is it a blanket, or a quilt, or a comforter, or whatever?

In my language, the thing we put on our bodies is called ??, no matter it's cushioned or not, how thick it is. The Chinese word ?? is literally translated as quilt in English, but I heard those foreign teachers call what I would call ?? a blanket. And then I noticed there are many confusing terms in English that are so similar but are used to refer to supposedly different items.

I think I would call the thing in your photo a comforter, although the faceless thing on top of it is so distracting I'm not sure. Basically, a blanket is a single piece of thick, warm, often fuzzy material. A comforter is like a large pillowcase of thin fabric with soft stuffing inside.

  • A quilt is two layers of fabric with a filling in between them -- usually the top layer is many small pieces sewn together in a pattern, and the two layers are sewn together (through the filling) in a number of places.
  • Do a google image search for each of the three terms and it will be much more clear, (Oh, there's another one -- an afghan is similar to a blanket, but instead of being a solid piece of material it is knitted or crocheted.

I'd call it a dummy, but the dummy is lying on what I'd call a comforter.

The word "comforter", in this sense, is not used in the UK, as far as I know. As far as I can tell, the thing in your picture is what I would call a quilt or duvet. That is two layers of thin material with some insulating filling in between.

The picture is quite horrific, by the way.
