Thank you Clive, I mean big, old blackbirds.

It was misunderstood during a one-month study by a researcher that big, old blackbirds lived longer than young, small blackbirds.

Maybe:

"A researcher who carried out a one-month study of blackbirds failed to understand that big, old blackbirds live longer than small, young blackbirds."

(The old ones are the wily ones.)

Hi,

I still find this sentence a little odd. It sounds rather like 'Old blackbirds live longer than young blackbirds'. What the heck does that mean?

Perhaps one could simply say that 'Big blackbirds live longer than small blackbirds'?

Best wishes, Clive

Well, I took it to mean that young, small blackbirds had a lower rate of survival than old, big blackbirds.

For instance, nestlings might have a high mortality rate, because of predation by magpies, etc. So the chances of surviving beyond 6 weeks might be quite low; but once you'd reached 6 weeks, you might have quite a good chance of surviving till you were one year old.
