Black Watch accent

I heard one of the Black Watch soldiers speaking about a lost comrade, and as he spoke he seemed to say that he was always "smelling", and tellling jokes so that others were "smelling" too.

I gathered it wasn't a comment on his joke-telling ability, but a case of the vowel inflection hiding the word "smiling".

I thought they were Scots, but this person must have come from someplace in Scotland other than Edinburgh, surely?

cheers

There is a lot of Scotland that isn't in Edinburgh, and the accent varies quite dramatically across the country. The regiment's headquarters are in Perth, which is not very far (geographically) from Edinburgh but do

You don't have to be a Scot to join the Black Watch (though it helps). They will take recruits from all over the UK so you can hear Highland, Lowland and b
