Black eyes

The second Saltykov brother, Sergei, was entirely different. Sergei was handsome and ruthless; a man who was making the seduction of women his life’s purpose. He was dark-complexioned, with black eyes, of medium height, and muscular yet graceful. Constantly


I learnt it is wrong to describe the colour of someone's eyes as 'black eyes', but dark eyes, because that refers to someone's eyes that get bruised. Do you think this is correct? Thanks!
