Birthday

Is this OK: Had a fun time at Jane’s first birthday! I've never seen so many kids in my life... Yikes!

Is yikes okay here? It's not a negative connotation, is it?

" is a bit negative, but I think it's an entirely appropriate response to being surrounded by babies if you're not used to it. It implies mild alarm and suggests that you wouldn't want to make a habit of it. I think it's funny!

It's only very mildly negative in the given context — at least in my opinion. It's more an exclamation of surprise than of consternation, though both factors are involved.
