"bioinformatics algorithms" versus "bioinformatic algorithms"

Hi,
I'm wondering which is better to say:
... designed bioinformatics algorithms
... designed bioinformatic algorithms
Also, if I throw in an adjective like innovative after the word designed, would it need a comma?
Thanks for your help.
