Vocabulary

Bind off / cast off / take off

Hi teachers,

I read this example in the dictionary:

He cast off his clothes, and dived into the swimming pool.

1. I understand "take off" has the same meaning. Is "cast off" frequently used?

2. What is "to cast off in knitting"?

3. The dictionary says: Bind off means cast off, does that mean I can say: "to bind off in knitting"?

Thank you.

Hi Mister Micawber,

Thank you so much.

Have a great evening.

When you start knitting something, you "cast on" a number of stitches. When you are finished knitting the piece and you want to secure the stitches so you can remove the needles without having the whole thing unravel, you "cast off" or "bind off" --- the two terms mean the same thing in knitting.

Yes, obsessively. Rarely does it come in handy for English Forums, but when it does, I'm ready!

As soon as I read the first post, I thought "khoff!"

Didn't you tell us once that you had been part of a Guinness Book of World Records group for the most people simultaneously knitting?

That's right, at Sock Summit '09. I wonder if it ever made it into the record book?
