Tis essay called The Aims of Education and it was written by Alred North Whitehead .
The former sentences is Every intellectual revolution which has ever stirred humannity into greatness has been a passionate protest against inert ideas. I think 'it' refers to intellectual revolution and 'inert ideas' are ideas that are merely recived into the mind without being utilised, or tested , or thrown into fresh combinations.

sorry,i don't know how to judge the level.
This sentence is in our text book, we have to study such sentences. I'm a undergraduate majoring in english (I'm ashamed to say that i'm a english major student, becouse my english is very poor, especially my grammer .)In China there are two test for english majors called TEM4 &TEM8. TEM8 is a most difficult english test. we'll have the test in next semester . So this essay is for the english major students who are in grade 4.

When he was a boy, he attended a school called Rugby.
He had no big successes there (he was undistinguished)
In his later life, ie as a man, he had success. (We usually say 'later life'. 'After life' usually refers to what happens after you are dead.)
This surprised people.
