"bill" or "check"?

My friends and I went to a restaurant and had something to eat. After eating, what should I tell the waiter/ waitress? Should I say, "Can we get our bill, please?" or "Can we get our check, please?" or something else? Thank you!

Both are quite common. Personally I prefer "bill" because "check" is used for too many things, including a form of payment! Could we have the bill, please?

Hi,

In Canada, we usually say 'check' rather than 'bill'.

The waiter is unlikely to bring me a cheque, blank or otherwise.

I always ask for the check.
In contrast, I get all sorts of bills in the mail: for electricity, gas, phone service, and so on.
