What are measures can the government take to discourage people from using their cars?

These days, the issue of traffic congestion caused by the increase in private cars over the past thirty years has been receiving the public's attention. Although this problem is attributed to a host of reasons, I believe that some actions could be considered to alleviate this problem by governments.

It is obvious that there are various reasons why people have a preference for owning cars. First, since car ownership brings mobility to users, they can travel wherever they want and control how fast they drive which increases the demand for purchasing cars. Moreover, it is easier for people to afford their automobile due to the fact that now, there is various type of cars which range from different prices.

In terms of negative effects of the increase in automobile ownership, the most prominent one can be seen is that traffic jams which happens often, remarkable during rush hours. More seriously, this problem leads to some unwanted accidents, causing casualties for a huge of people. It is evident that big traffic congestion can be witnessed clearly in some Southeast Asian countries, for example, Vietnam where people have to face this issue every day that it takes them from 1 to 2hours to completely get out of the traffic jams.

There are some proactive measures that can be taken into account by authorities. First, in order to decline the number of private cars, people should be encouraged to use more public transportation. It means the important thing is to raise citizens' awareness of this issue. By doing that, governments could create some advertisements or campaigns about the importance of public vehicles which not only limit big traffic jams but also save the environment. Second, whilst the vehicle companies produce their cars, the government should build and develop the road infrastructure in order to give enough space for many vehicles to minimize the congestion of traffic. Finally, if governments focus on both the quality of some public transportation and the expansion, including buses, underground trains, etc.. citizens can have more opportunities to reach them and be offered safer and better facilities.

In conclusion, the growth of automobile ownership is causing big traffic congestions in many cities. However, it would be better if governments take some more practical solutions than restricting people to buy cars.
