Big hammers used in quarries

What do you call the big hammers that people use quarries to blast the rocks? Mallets? Maces?

Top answer

I wouldn't think that hammers are used to "blast" rocks. A mallet usually has a wooden head, so would be no use on rock. A mace is something different.

Sorry, I meant striking and splitting stones in a quarry. I used the wrong verb. Thanks, GPY.

In the US, jackhammer or hoeram.

A jackhammer and a sledgehammer are different things. A jackhammer is powered by compressed air (normally). A sledgehammer is wielded by hand. I had assumed that Gamboler meant a non-mechanical hammer, but I suppose that may not be right.

I meant a non-mechanical hammer, GPY.
But in the movie whose dialogues I am transcribing sometimes they just call them "jacks", that I guess it's short for jackhammers. (USA old movie, of course)

Of course, Blue Jay. Now I see that the tool that they used was the so called single jack. Thanks a lot.
