big and proud

"He smiled big and proud."

Is the above sentence correct? And if it is, can you explain why? "Big" and "proud" are both adjectives, but they are working like adverbs here. Can adjectives work like adverbs? I found this sentence in Cecil Castellucci's novel "Beige."

Thank you!

vdb Can adjectives work like adverbs? Yes, but it is more of a literary style. There is no adverb "bigly" and "He smiled proudly" has a different meaning.
