Beyond the bench

Hello everyone,

I encountered the following sentence in a book named https://books.google.com/books?id=QhUpCwAAQBAJ&pg=PA88&lpg=PA88&dq=%22beyond+the+bench%22%2B%22motto%22&source=bl&ots=KQ70idUHS6&sig=MgxKwMxlMwPrE5iAzQwJlUhoMsQ&hl=en&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwj7nOTgtv7bAhWEBsAKHWR8DeUQ6AEwAnoECAEQNA#v=onepage&q=%22beyond%20the%20bench%22%2B%22motto%22&f=false

The motto “beyond the bench” indicates that already at the small scale stage the requirements for carrying out at the next higher level must be considered and a further improvement can be obtained when the optimization issues are integrated, rather than focused to separated areas (mass, energy, space, time) [6].

Does aforementioned motto have any figurative meaning in English?

Thank you so much for your consideration.

I think that "bench" refers to a laboratory bench (place where experimental research is carried out), and "beyond the bench" refers to the "real world" outside the lab, i.e. to considerations of large-scale manufacturing and commercialisation.
