Beyond reach meaning?

It was a record that seemed beyond reach.
What does the sentence above mean?(1) Does it mean that it was a seemingly inaccessible record? Or(2) Does it mean that the record seemed to be unbreakable.I looked up the meaning of the phrase beyond reach, but I could not exactly figure out what the sentence is trying to say.Could you help me clarify it? Thanks.
