Beyond gay

Hello there,
I have a question about meaning of this sentence:

Julie: "Josh got Emily this huge conflict free diamond ring. He proposed at the lake. We were all there and it was beyond gay."

What does "it was beyond gay" mean? Josh surely isn't gay.

Thank you

Please provide some more context, particularly the next few sentences,

Ok, there is a family dinner - mother, son (Josh) and daughter (Julia).

Julia said: "Josh got Emily this conflict-free diamond. He proposed at the lake. We were all there It was beyond gay."

and Josh replied: "Well, we, uh, wanted to keep things quiet for a while."

then mother was asking: "But Julie said everybody was at the proposal."

Julia had a question too

That context doesn't help much.

Nobody really uses the word 'gay' anymore to mean 'joyful',

My guess is that the meaning here is that it was a strange and rather crazy situation.

Doesn't help, but it is practically whole scene.
Anyway, your tip seems to be right.
Thank you very much, Clive.
Have a nice weekend.

(If you are wondering, it is scene from Ricki and the Flash with Meryl Streep.)
