Beware

In drafting the notice for passengers on a train, could we say these:

-Be aware of the difference in levels between train and platform.
-Beware of the difference in levels between train and platform.

My friend said the first one is downright wrong, but it sounds OK to me.

OttoJ, Strictly speaking, the first one ("Be aware of") is not wrong at all. Neither is the second, for that matter, although I would say "Beware the difference . " (dropping "of" in that particular context).
