Between vs. In-between

The girl lost her marble when it rolled across the floor and fell between the cracks.

vs.

The girl lost her marble when it rolled across the floor and fell in-between the cracks

which is correct? or could it be just that it should be "crack" instead of "cracks"

Top answer

" Although "fall between the cracks" is used figuratively to mean "be overlooked," in this literal situation I think it's worth noting that the space in between the cracks is the solid floor.

I would say the marble "fell into a crack," or else it "fell in between the floorboards." Although "fall between the cracks" is used figuratively to mean "be overlooked," in this literal situation I think it's worth noting that the space in between the cracks is the solid floor.
