Usually, "between two things," and "among a larger number of things."

Use between when talking about things in pairs -- that is, when considering them two at a time -- no matter how many things there are in total.

It's sometimes difficult to tell the difference between twins.

Use among when talking about things in a group of more than two things.

Bits of driftwood were scattered among the stones on the beach.

It can be confusing.

Betty was walking between John and Jim. There are three of them, but only two in the prepositional phrase.

What's a little scandel between/among friends?
Can you assume from this that "between" means only two friends and "among" means more than two friends? Perhaps not.

Anyway, "What's a little X between/among friends" is sort of a fixed expression, and either one may be used, according to the number of people involved.

But I think it would be okay to use either one, because you're simply citing it as a principle, and not using it to describe your exact situation.
