Between "Scylla and Charybdis"

Hi

A couple of years ago, some university gave the idiom "Between
Scylla and Charybdis" in one of its pre-entry tests. Since then, the idiom became -- shall I say, relatively common on this side of the pond.

I would like to know how common this idiom is among native speakers. Would a high school student be familiar with it?

Thanks,

Tom

PS: Is the same as "Between the rock and a hard place"?
