Between 2005 and 2009?

How to understand this phrase in this context:

Suppose we have a charts listing birth rates in USA over the past ten years (from 2000 to 2009).
Then we are asked to compare the birth rates between 2005 and 2009.

I was wondering what does this mean by "between 2005 and 2009?"
1. Only the two years, 2005, 2009?

2. The five years, 05,06,07,08,09?

Thanks a lot.

2) is correct. If you want to compare only the two years then say "compare the birth rates in 2005 and 2009 (respectively). BTW, in the US it's usually "from 2000 through 2009" otherwise 2009 is not included.
