Better/Rather

I couldn't distinguish a difference between the meanings of "better" and "rather".

[1]To me, their meanings are similar."Better" is so often used as an adjective but "Rather" is used only as an adverb. Is my thought right?

[2]You'd better stay home.
"'d" indicate "had",not "would",doesn't it?

[3]You'd better stay home = You would rather stay home ( the same?)

Thank you for your answer in advance.
