Best option?

Hi,

Cats may have beaten dogs on the Internet but felines have been a _____ breed in genetics labs compared with their canine counterparts.

A) mixed
B) inter
C) rare
D) cross
E) half

Weird question. There is only one correct answer but I think all of them are OK in this context. I need a short explanation.

Thank you.
